What should I consider when selecting  a sleeping bag?

When looking for the right sleeping bag for your needs, there are multiple things to consider.  One of which is the seasons you are going camping, since each sleeping bag has a temperature rating.  There are some light bags that have a rating of 40 to 50 degrees for summer camping.  Other bags  that are rated between 40 to -20 degrees and still others rated at -20 degrees and below.

Each bag has different styles such as mummy, rectangular and double bags.  The mummy bags tend to be warmer and offer more coverage with some including head covers.  The rectangular will provide more room and some have contoured hoods also.  But it does allow more air flow.  If a bag is too roomy it will not keep you as warm as a snug one.  Top off your selection with sleeping pad that is placed under the bag for additional insulation and padding from the cold.

What should I consider when selecting a tent?

When selecting the perfect tent for your great adventure, there are multiple things you want to consider when making your selection.

  • What seasons will you be using your new tent?  Light weight summer tents may not provide the comfort and coverage for all seasons in your area. coverage where a 3 season or 4 season tent will provide more.
  • If you're a three-season backpacker who hikes late into the fall, you might want a four-season tent for a convertible model.
  • Four-season tents are heavier than other models because of extra poles.
  • Convertible tents allow you to add or omit poles and adjust ventilation as conditions dictate. This leaves you somewhat in control of the weight.
  • How big a tent do you need for 2 people, 4people, or a family?  Keep in mind space ratings may be optimistic.  Some 2 person tents may be tight for 2 tall adults and their gear.  It would be better to choose a 3 person for the extra room and inside storage capacity for your gear.

How do I safeguard from animals getting into  our food supplies  while camping?

This is a key point to consider so you will have a safe and enjoyable adventure without worry about animals getting at your food.  If you are weekend camping or tailgate camping  an ice chest and airtight containers are ideal.  However these should be stored in your vehicles and not out in the open,

If your are backpacking, make sure you bring one of our airtight/waterproof storage bags with you.  In the evening, before you retire, place your food stores in the bag and tie it closed.  Using your general purpose rope; raise the  food supplies over a branch high enough  that animals can not get at them.  Here again though this should be away from the tent area of your camp.
